Wednesday, January 11, 2:30 p.m . Featured Book: Lab Girl by Hope Jahren
– “Lab Girl is the story of a girl who becomes a scientist. It’s also the story of a
career and the endless struggles over funding, recognition and politics that get
in the way. It’s the story of the plants and soil she studies. But – and this is the
weirdest, coolest part about this book – it is really the story of two lab partners and
their uncommon bond” – Washington Post
Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens Private Tour – Tuesday,
January 10, Cost is $48 for members and $58 for non-members.
Take an in-depth look at the current exhibits (including the Origami exhibit) in
the museum galleries, the Seishinan Tea House, the Donald B. Gordon Memorial
Library, as well as a brief introduction of the gardens. After the private tour, lunch
is on your own at the Morikami’s Cornell Café. After lunch, tour Rojien: The
Garden of the Drops of Dew. Round trip transportation is included. Limited to 30
participants, first come, first served. Advanced registration is required by January
Rosy Tomorrows Heritage Farms Tour and Lunch – Wednesday, January
25. Cost is $25 for members and $35 for non-members.
This is a repeat favorite of a casual farm walking tour where you can see the
free range animals and learn more about the organic and holistic methods used at
Rosy Tomorrows Farm. The pre fixe lunch is all fresh from the farm and prepared
by the head chef and staff. You will also have the opportunity to purchase
organically grown produce, organically raised and pastured meats, and prepared
foods. Carpooling is available. Advance registration required by Friday, January
Edison Ford Winter Estates Inside the Homes Tour and River Cruise –
Monday, January 30. Cost is $67 for members and $72 for non-members.
Begin the adventure with a scenic river cruise, narrated by a knowledgeable
captain and docent. Lunch is on your own at Pinchers Restaurant, located on
the Caloosahatchee. After lunch, take a tour inside the homes, where you will
step back in time and imagine Fort Myers as it was for Thomas Edison. Discover
how Edison lived, studied, dined and entertained in this behind-the-scenes tour.
Advance registration is required by Friday, January 27. Limited to 20 participants,
first come, first served.
Learn to Play Mahjongg with Katie Reid – January 23 to 27, 9:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. Cost is $15 for members and $30 for non-members.
Class is limited to four or eight students (to fill a table to practice). You must be
able to attend all five classes. All supplies are provided. Register in advance.
Learn to Play Bridge with Christl and Bruce Smith – January 30,
February 1, 6 and 8, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $20 for members and $35 for

Kayaking, Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 3 and 5 – (weather
permitting) at 8:30 a.m . There is space for 16 people on eight two-person kayaks
and limited space for those who own their own kayaks. Island Seniors will provide
kayaks, paddles and life jackets. Bring water, a snack, sun lotion, bug spray,
sunglasses, towel, hat and change of clothing. Cost is $5 for members and $10 for
non-members. Advance registration is required.
Line Dancing Classes – Tuesday, January 10, 17, 24 and 31 at 12:30 p.m .
Cost is $5 for members and $8 for non-members.
The instructor will review dance steps then turn up the music so you can dance.
Bring a friend. Call to register.
Members cost is $4 per class, visitors $7 per class. Annual membership is $20.
Sanibel Recreation Center members must show their membership card to attend.
Happy Hour Fitness – Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 a.m . Keep your
brain fit and your heart, lungs and muscles strong with a combination of aerobics
and muscle conditioning exercises. Hand weights, stretch cords and body weight
are used. Athletic footwear required. Instructors are Grace Elston and Connie
Essential Total Fitness – Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 and 11
a.m. Cardio, muscle strengthening and flexibility training with hand weights,
stretch cords, chairs and stability balls. Athletic footwear is required. Mahnaz
Bassiri is the instructor.
Power Hour Fitness – Tuesday and Thursday at 8 a.m. Hand weights,
stretch cords, stability balls and mats are used. Improve core strength and balance.
Athletic footwear required. Mahnaz Bassiri is the instructor.
Gentle Yoga – Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Stretch, tone and
strengthen while improving flexibility, proper alignment and circulation. Bring a
towel. Kim Kouril is the instructor.
Chair Yoga – Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m . Similar to gentle yoga but all
poses are done in a chair. Kim Kouril is the instructor.

Enjoy a guided meditation on the beach as the sun sets and the moon rises.
A New Moon Meditation class is offered Thursday, December 29 at 5 p.m.
at Alison Hagerup Beach Park, 14790 Captiva Drive, on Captiva. Suggested
donation is $10 to 15 with all proceeds benefitting Sanibel-Captiva Conservation
Foundation’s sea turtle research program. Bring a towel or blanket to sit on.
